Queensland Positive People is delighted to announce that we have been awarded funding from the LGBTIQA+ Health Program funded by the Australian Government and administered by LGBTIQ+ Health Australia, to deliver a new statewide LGBTIQA+-affirming, HIV-informed Mental Health and Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD) pilot program.
This achievement marks a significant milestone for QPP. It reflects the trust placed in us by both government and community to deliver innovative, community-led care. By expanding our integrated, peer-led service model, this initiative directly addresses a crucial gap in Queensland’s healthcare system—increasing equitable access to specialized mental health and AOD support for LGBTIQA+ communities and people living with HIV.
This pilot is one of 18 projects funded nationally in this funding round, with other HIV-sector peers Living Positive Victoria and Meridian, in the ACT, both delivering peer-led, HIV-informed support in their states and territories. As our friends from LPV mention “This is an exciting, national moment for community-led HIV and LGBTIQA+ health work” and we totally agree.
This pilot program will provide statewide telehealth counselling alongside peer-led group programs designed to foster health literacy, harm reduction, and community connection.
Key focus areas include:
- Short-Term Support: Early-intervention telehealth counselling for individuals experiencing mild-to-moderate mental health or AOD concerns.
- Peer-Led Groups: Online and in-person sessions focused on AOD harm reduction, psychoeducation, and building community connections.
- Improved Access: Accessible, affirming support tailored for regional and remote Queenslanders, as well as those who are Medicare-ineligible.
- Streamlined Care: Clear referral pathways connecting participants with mainstream mental health and AOD services.
- Evidence-Based Evaluation: A robust evaluation conducted in partnership with academic researchers to demonstrate feasibility, scalability, and long-term sustainability.
We look forward to rolling out this vital service in the coming months, and continuing to advocate for community-driven health solutions for our communities across Queensland.
