Over the past year, we’ve been working to maintain and revitalise our Cairns Social Group. We’ve trialled a number of approaches that have proven successful in other regions, aiming to build a consistent and inclusive space for people living with HIV in Far North Queensland.
Despite these efforts, attendance and engagement in Cairns have remained very low. After thoughtful reflection—and discussions with community members and long-time allies in the Cairns HIV sector—we’ve come to understand that many people living with HIV in the region already have strong personal networks, established medical support, and social connections. In this context, the need for a structured social group appears to be limited at this time.
As a result, QPP has made the considered decision to place the Cairns Social Group paused for now.
This is not a closure of support.
Our commitment to the Cairns community remains strong. If there’s ever a renewed interest in a local group, or if someone’s support needs change, QPP will be ready to respond. Our dedicated Treatment Support Facilitator continues to be available locally, and referrals can be made at any time.
For those seeking social connection, Cairns still offers a range of LGBTQIA+ and HIV-friendly events and groups. If you’d like a list of recommended local options, feel free to email Brad for more information.
Thank you to everyone who has supported or participated in the Cairns Social Group over the years. You remain a valued part of the QPP community, and we’re always here when you need us.
