SUMMARY:HIV Long-Term Survivors Awareness Day
DESCRIPTION:June 5th is HIV Long-Term Survivors Awareness Day (HLTSAD). \nFirst observed in 2014\, it’s a day to honour long-term survivors of HIV and raise awareness about their needs\, issues\, and journeys. This years theme is ‘Leading with Legacy’.The selection of June 5 for this annual observance coincides with the anniversary of the first official reporting of what became known as the AIDS epidemic on 5 June 1981 by the CDC in the US. HIV Long-Term Survivors (HLTS) represent a diverse group of people\, including people diagnosed with HIV before the advent of Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy or HAART in 1996. Often overlooked\, HLTS includes people born with HIV or who acquired the virus as babies and are now in their 30s and 40s. HLTS are also those living with HIV for over 25 years. \nWe join the world in recognising people living with HIV long term. This day is to commemorate and celebrate the lives\, courage\, and advocacy of those who pioneered the HIV response.  Those who have been living with the pandemic for forty years have paved the way for research\, medical advancements\, and policy change.  We respect and honour them\, knowing the impact on their lives has been significant.  \nFor events in your state or territory visit the NAPWHA page. \nTo we’d also encourage you to read our 2025 HIV Long Term Survivors Awareness Day Reflections contributed by community members to celebrate the day. \n\n  \n\n  \n\n  \n\n  \n\n  \n\n
